At Southold Fish Market, you're not just dining—you're sourcing your seafood straight from the market. Their retail counter offers everything from swordfish steaks to local clams, scallops, and shrimp. Visitors love the flexibility of choosing raw seafood to take home or ordering it prepared fresh in the kitchen. Add in freezer-ready soups, chowders, and seafood pies, and it's no wonder this place draws lines every weekend.
The in-house restaurant is famous for its warm and cold lobster rolls, fish & chips, and generously portioned fried baskets. Customers rave about the freshness of the seafood and the attention to detail—whether it's a simple shrimp taco or a charbroiled oyster topped with Romano cheese. The food is straightforward, flavorful, and made to order. It's not uncommon to see people return several times in one trip just to try more.
Beyond the food, Southold Fish Market thrives on its laid-back coastal vibe. You'll find indoor and outdoor seating, local beers on tap, and friendly service that feels neighborly. Visitors often describe it as the kind of place where memories are made—whether that's sipping chowder in the sun or picking out the perfect fillet for dinner.
One of the most common themes in reviews? Return visits. Guests regularly mention driving hours—or even flying in from out of state—just to get a taste of what they call the best seafood on Long Island. It's that consistent freshness, generous hospitality, and commitment to local sourcing that keeps people coming back.
What sets Southold Fish Market apart is its simplicity. There's no flashy branding, no trendy fusion menus—just honest food done right. Whether it's a $9 shrimp cocktail or a $33 lobster roll, you'll get what you pay for: premium quality, cooked with care. And when the wait is long, most customers agree—it's worth every minute.
The food was fresh and ready on time. I ordered flounder and it was nicely breaded and not overcooked. A friend had charred oysters and could not stop murmuring how great they were throughout our meal. I was met with a friendly hello and smile - a nicety that's always appreciated!
This is one of those places that you can tell is amazing right when you walk in. Tons of fish on ice, freezers packed with more food, tables full, workers running around, oysters being shucked, fish being fried, one guy dodging his coworkers carrying a big tray of smoked salmon. I already knew my meal would be incredible before I ordered it. The four of us had a little bit of everything... oysters, clams, lobster bisque, fried shrimp, clam strips, scallops, seafood salad. It exceeded our expectations and we talked about it for the rest of the weekend. We went up and down the North Fork touring wineries but the highlight of our trip was the Southold Fish Market.
Food is excellent. But portions are small and prices a little high.
We enjoyed a Sunday afternoon having a fresh fish lunch. Bay scallops were sweet and tender. The fried clams were taste. Service was friendly and smooth. Lots of people there and they handled it well. We sat outside at the picnic tables and enjoyed the sunshine. Good stop. May people just came to buy fish to take home. One of our favorite stops
This is just the best seafood restaurant in Long Island! Everything is perfect.
This place is great every time my wife and I come here it's always busy because the food is really good. Lobster rolls are always stuffed and the oysters are always shucked to perfectly. The sandwiches are good as well, and even if you don't get anything they make you can always buy the ingredients and bring them home. Our go to spot.
